Fur protesters howl against cruelty

The Standard,2014/1/20

A flash mob of 200 people staged a five-minute protest at Times Square against wearing fur.

The activists held placards saying "no fur" and some wore panda and tiger costumes as others took off accessories made of fur during the protest.

Protest organizer David Wong Kai-yan of Animal Earth said people should understand that when fur is used, animals suffer from pain and inhumane conditions.

He said European and American fashion created terrifying situations in fur factories, where workers brutally kill animals such as foxes, rabbits, cats, dogs and hamsters.

"People killed live animals for their fur only and abandoned their bodies somewhere, leaving them in pain," Wong said.

He said businessmen play on customers' ignorance by saying "no real animal fur can be bought at a low price" so that they can produce clothes made with fur at low cost.

Wong said people in a civilized city such as Hong Kong should stop buying fur.

"The flash mob activity is to arouse the awareness of local people not to purchase fur. Besides the pain caused to animals, it is also unethical."
